Mexico Means Marlin (and other billfish too)Marlin Magazine has ranked Mexico's Yucatan peninsula one of its Top 20 Billfishing Destinations, both for the light tackle fishing and the variety of species, and Puerto Aventuras is frequently featured in magazines like Sport Fishing and Saltwater Sportsman. You can expect to see tons of Atlantic sailfish with good numbers of white marlin mixed in from late March through June or even July. The prime months are April and May. The area of the Yucatan is similar to Venezuela's in its reliable production of billfish grand slams (one each of sailfish, white marlin, blue marlin). In addition to the good runs of sailfish and white marlin in the spring, blue marlin make a good showing from late April through June. The experienced crew knows the best places to go any time of the year.

Sailfish, white and blue marlin, slammer dolphins, blackfin, skipjack, yellowfin tuna, kingfish and wahoo are abundant in the waters near Puerto Aventuras, depending on the time of year. Atlantic sailfish migrate from late March to June or July. White marlin in May. June for blue marlin. Dorado (mahi mahi), snapper, tuna, kingfish and wahoo can be caught year round. Non migratory sailfish live close by throughout the year. Occasionally we see broadbill swordfish or spearfish. Most of the billfish are average size, but world records are set nearly every year so come try your luck!
Sure, you could fly to Australia or Venezuela to chase billfish, but why spend the money and time? The fishing in the Yucatan is world class and will cost you 1/8 of what a trip to these other famous billfishing destinations would cost.
You can reach the area from the United States or Canada in 1/2 the time. Airlines are constantly running sales on tickets to Cancun, especially during the tourist off season. Fortunately for grand slam seekers, the off season for tourism is the ON season for billfish so you can take advantage of these specials.
Puerto Aventuras is just one hour south of Cancun, and an easy 15 minutes from Playa del Carmen.
Sailfishing lies directly off the Puerto Aventuras Marina, so there is no running time to your destination. Each spring, the sailfish migrate through the channel between the mainland and Cozumel, and there are opportunities to catch them just 200 yards from shore.
Boats from the mainland save travel time over boats from Cozumel which must travel an hour towards Puerto Aventuras before they can start fishing (adding the the cost as well). Charters from Puerto Aventuras are much cheaper and closer to the fishing grounds.
Conservation is well practiced here, with all billfishing done on a catch and release basis. Our
experienced captain can take pictures of your trophy fish and have an excellent fiberglass replica made and shipped to you at home. You can fish the reef for yellowtail snapper, dorado, and grouper which can be kept for a tasty dinner.
On days when you aren't fishing, you can enjoy the attractions of the Cancun-Playa del Carmen-Tulum Corridor, Mexico's hottest tourist destination. Enjoy golf in Cancun, Playacar and Puerto Aventuras, visit the Mayan ruins of Tulum and Coba, spend the day snorkeling at eco parks like Xcaret and Xel Ha, drink margaritas in Playa del Carmen.... There is something for everyone. For more about what to do in the area, visit CancunSouth.com.
